Aunty Yvonne Kent

Aunty Yvonne Kent was an iconic indigenous elder and leader for the cohesion and collaboration between the local first nation people, the Gomaroi people, and the broader community. She engaged enthusiastically in the first 10X Tamworth community-based leadership development program in 2016 and became a founding member of Regional Unlimited, being appointed to the board in 2019.

Sadly, Aunty passed during the first wave of COVID. The RU Board made a commitment to host multiple community events to complete a portrait of Aunty and include the community in the process.

This project is more then a commemoration of Aunty. It is a leadership development program designed to spotlight and foster leadership in our community. The Aunty Yvonne Kent Commemorative Portrait Leadership Development Program will run from March to December 2023.

Project Purpose

  1. To spotlight Aunty's example of an inclusive, relationship based model of leadership by hosting a TED type speaking event, with the theme "Community-based Leadership Development; Why and How".
  2. To honour and commemorate Aunty's contribution to the community, by joining together in painting her portrait.
  3. To further her work and expand networking, growing the leadership capacity, by bringing together people accross the community to organise the painting and speaking event.

This Leadership Development program to be centered around Aunty’s Leadership example, as the Regional Unlimited board;

  • brings the community together to honour exemplary leadership,,
  • further spotlighting community-based leadership, and
  • strengthens and expands inclusion accross the community.

In the process we will:

  • provide leadership development to the committees working together with RU,
  • runs the leadership development from February 2023 to May 2023
  • host 3 community painting and speaking events (1 daytime, 1 evening and 1 weekend) in June 2023, and
  • host a closing event in July 2023 for the gifting of the artwork to the Tamworth Regional Council (TRC), to hold and keep safe on behalf of the community, installing it in a prominent place.

  • Do you aspire to make a meaningful contribution in the community?... You will find a safe space to learn about leadership.
  • Do you believe, as Aunty examplified, "We Are One", that together we can achieve more and together is how we heal and grow?... You can help us call people to this program.
  • Are you already leading and contributing and wants to encourage others to do so?... You might like to mentor or share your expertise.
  • Have you been touched by Aunty and want to honour and continue her example?...You may want to help with the painting or speak about her.
  • Do you understand the importance of developing leadership from within our own community and have ideas for how we can do this?... You might like to be one of the speakers at the event.
